Power Pole Replacement

A private power pole is a pole on your property that carries power from the street connection to your house, shed or another building. In WA, if the pole is on your side of the connection, it belongs to you. It is your responsibility to inspect it, maintain it and replace it when it is no longer safe. Wooden poles do not last forever. Rot at ground level, termite damage, cracks, a lean, or a pole that has been hit by a vehicle can all lead to it falling, bringing live lines down with it.

WA safety guidance says owners should check private poles at least once a year. The network operator only inspects the first private pole connected to its service cable, so any other poles on your property are up to you.

How we assess and replace a pole

We start with an assessment of the pole and its lines, looking at the base, the timber, the lean and the fittings at the top. If it needs replacing, you get a fixed price before we start.

Any work on a pole that is part of your electrical installation must be done by a licensed electrical worker. Where the job needs the supply turned off at Western Power's end, we arrange that with them as part of the job, so you do not have to organise it yourself.

In some cases, it is worth replacing an old pole with an underground cable instead. WA's own guidance on private poles suggests this, and it removes the pole from future inspections. We can price both options so you can choose.
