About this Service

We do mains upgrades for homes and small businesses across Perth's northern suburbs and the inner west, including the Western Power paperwork and coordination.

A mains upgrade increases the capacity of the cable connecting your property to Western Power's network, needed when the existing mains can't keep up with modern electrical loads, EV chargers, air conditioning, or a switchboard upgrade that requires more supply capacity. This work also covers Western Power disconnect and reconnect coordination, and new connection approval where a property needs one, handled as part of the job rather than left for the customer to sort separately.

When a Perth home needs a mains upgrade

The consumer mains is the cable that runs from Western Power's point of supply to your main switchboard. Older homes often have mains cable that was sized for a much smaller load. Adding ducted air conditioning, an EV charger, a pool, a granny flat or an induction cooktop can push it past what it was designed for.

Signs the mains may be undersized include lights dimming when big appliances start, a main switch that trips under heavy load, or a switchboard upgrade that shows the supply cannot carry what the house now needs.

How Western Power fits in

A change to your supply has to go through a registered electrical contractor. We lodge the notices with Western Power, arrange the disconnection and reconnection, and do the work on your side of the connection. Western Power sets its own dates. For a change from single phase to three phase supply, Western Power's own guidance allows 5 to 7 weeks for the disconnect and reconnect once phase availability is confirmed, so plan ahead.

Once the work is complete, we lodge the Notice of Completion and give you an Electrical Safety Certificate.

A mains upgrade often goes together with a switchboard upgrade. If the board is also old, doing both in one job means one shutdown and one set of paperwork. For granny flats and sheds, the supply may also need to be run out from the main board, with the cable sized for the distance.

Price and timing

Every mains upgrade is different, depending on the cable run, the distance to the supply point and whether the switchboard also needs work. We look at the job first and give you a fixed price before we start, with no surprise fees.

Common questions

Do you deal with Western Power for me?

Yes. We lodge the notices, arrange the disconnect and reconnect and do the work on your side. Western Power sets its own dates.

How long does a change to three phase take?

Western Power's guidance allows 5 to 7 weeks for the disconnect and reconnect once phase availability is confirmed. We give you a clear timeline when we quote.

Do I need a mains upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. A 7 kW single phase charger can go on a standard connection. We check your supply before recommending anything.
